Reading Assignment #1

The chart above is a break down of what is involved with research and design. This article briefly covers these principles but it mainly focuses on the element of design briefing. design briefing is really the bed-rock of starting a successful design, it involves obtaining important information that is associated with the project.

The company that they used for an example was a studio called A2.  It talks about how they were given a project from a museum that had some rather unique qualities. They requested that a (portable) feedback room be designed that could be taken with the museum display as it toured the country. With the perimeters provided and the purpose understood, A2 was able to generate a facility that was very successful.

Only having six to eight weeks to complete this project they were forced to think in a hyper attentive mode with out inevitably over complicating it. They new the audience and so they thought that making the comment cards post card size would give it more of an incentive to contribute, they also had pencil rods sticking out of the wall so people could hang their comments on the wall. This also theoretically contributes to the public display of mass participation and would create a stronger impulse to comment.

Needless to say, part of the design brief is the budget and deadline, in most cases it works to the graphic designers advantage, because it causes the designer to tap into the basics, and when a design is clean and quickly understood is when it begins to facilitate success.
